ANTM 10.11: ‘The best of the worst’

May 7th, 2008, 9:36 pm by Sam Mittelsteadt

1011domthumb.jpgThis week, we get two weeks’ worth of “previously” material. Important plot revealer, or time waster? You be the judge.

When the girls get home from saying goodbye to ka-TAR-zhe-na, the realize that some evil madman has vandalized their house, covering their walls with poster-size prints of – agh! – Saleisha. At one point one of the girls, I think it’s Whitney, asks, “She got to pose with Tyra?” which, duh, should get you kicked off the show at this point.

Dominique says when she first saw Saleisha during the previous cycle, she knew she would win. “I guess you could say I’m the Saleisha of this competition,” she adds. If by that she means both appeared on “America’s Next Top Model” and then never heard from again, she might be right! About that whole victory thing … not so much.

Shoe Hot or Not: Miu Miu edition

May 5th, 2008, 6:43 pm by Sam Mittelsteadt

I don’t know if it’s such a good idea to give away the brand of the shoe right there in the headline — I mean, some people are going to be swayed by its pedigree and not its appearance. And this is one shoe about which I’m squarely on the fence. (Ouch?)

Win free Philosophy products, thanks to EV store opening

May 2nd, 2008, 3:38 pm by Sam Mittelsteadt

Valley-based skin care and cosmetics company Philosophy is opening its second stand-alone store in the East Valley — and the country! — this week. (Well, technically it’s the third store, if you count the long-gone shop on Mill Avenue, where I first got introduced to the line.)

The grand opening of the store at Dana Park shopping center, on the northwest corner of Baseline Road and Val Vista Drive, is scheduled for April 10 and to celebrate, the lovely folks at Philosophy let me pick out a few of their new items for a Tribune giveaway. See below for how to enter.

Shoe Hot or Not: Giuseppe Zanotti wedge edition

April 29th, 2008, 3:28 pm by Sam Mittelsteadt

zanottiwedge.jpg

I think I’ve finally figured out why I don’t like platform-style wedge mules: Because there’s frankencostume.jpgnothing up top to balance out the big chunk of heel, it gives women Frankenfoot — those big clunky feet like Frankenstein always is clodding around in.

Plus, the stained-glass-style pattern on this Giuseppe Zanotti wedge is pretty dark and attention-getting, which only exacerbates the effect. I don’t think it’s necessarily the color of the shoe itself, considering that I (and several readers) found this wedge in a similar shade of yellow adorable, but rather the treatment of the wedge. It looks heavy — and rather than making short women look taller, wearing these would make them look like short women running around on tall shoes.

Think I’m joking? Pretty much the sole difference (god, I crack myself up) between this week’s shoe — which, for the record, is $650 — and the Frankenfeet at left is the color palette, and the fact that the Scottsdale women who’ll buy the Zanotti wedge make sure their surgery scars are behind their ears, instead of across their foreheads.

But what do you think — am I full of it? Cast your vote in the poll below by clicking on your choice (or creating your own answer!) and hitting “enter.” And feel free to leave a comment below that — it’s not required to vote in the poll, but everyone who does leave a comment will be entered to win three tubes of Clinique’s new Long Last Glosswear with SPF 15. I’ll select one winner from the entries received by noon Friday, May 9. Good luck!

UPDATE: Congratulations to Elaine, whose comment was chosen as the winner.
