Great Stuff 8-31-08: In capsule form

August 26th, 2008, 1:23 pm · Post a Comment · posted by Sam Mittelsteadt

There is something about a single-dose skin care product that makes me giddy. I don’t know why — maybe it’s because I get the impression it combines super freshness with science? When those individual GoSmile tooth-whiteners came out, I walked around with one in my pocket day and night … just in case.

Even better are products in gelatin-capsule form, where I get to twist off the tip and squeeze out the product. (Added ardencaps.jpgbonus: biodegradable.) They’re also portable — when I went to San Francisco I dispensed the right quantity into a pillbox — no taking a full bottle of anything!

The concept isn’t new: More than 15 years ago Elizabeth Arden introduced Ceramide Eyes Time Complex Capsules. Now the company has updated its formula and rechristened the product Ceramide Gold Ultra Lift and Strengthening Eye Capsules ($52 for 60). Retinyl linoleate is purported to have the same effects as harsher retinol products without the irritation; astringent witch hazel and nettle extracts reduce puffiness; and vitamins C and E help protect skin from the effects of environmental stress. (The hopecaps.jpgformulation is a little more oily/liquidy than I was expecting: Be careful when you open and squeeze.) They’re available at most department stores.

I’ve been a devotee of Philosophy’s nighttime retinol/dermochlorella Booster Caps for awhile (along with Hope in a Jar, of course). The Phoenix-based company — which just opened a stand-alone store at Dana Park shopping center in Mesa — has created a new daytime sibling designed to plump skin. When Hope Is Not Enough capsules ($50 for 60) contain ultrahydrating hyaluronic acid, which holds many times its weight in moisture, and peptides to rehydrate skin and minimize the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Mix it with moisturizer for full effect. Find the Philosophy line at the company’s stores in Mesa or Casa Paloma in Chandler; at Sephora stores or Nordstrom in Chandler.
