Save earth by recycling plastic lids at Aveda

Did you know that screw caps off plastic bottles and jars usually aren’t recycled? They’re made of a different plastic than the bottles themselves, which isn’t as easily recycled, and if they’re not attached firmly to the original container they’re typically filtered out during the sorting process and sent to the dump. (In coastal cities they often end up polluting rivers and oceans, and kill birds and fish who mistake them for food.)
Aveda launched a cap recycling program back in April; the environmentally conscious hair and skin care company traded product samples for lids. The promotion ended after a month, but the program continues without the samples: Aveda stores collect the rigid plastic tops from everything from water bottles to peanut butter jars, then send the caps to a company that grinds, melts and molds them into new plastic tops for Aveda products. (Find your closest store here.) An article by The Record in Hackensack, N.J., says that about 50,000 pounds of plastic has been received so far.
More information about the program, including how to participate by mail, is here.
