Wednesday, July 30th, 2008 by Sam Mittelsteadt

Tonight we learn that Nina Garcia, like Keith Whitley’s beloved, says it best when she says nothing at all. Her criticism of losing designer Emily’s outfit goes something like this:

Shoe Hot or Not: D Squared edition

I never understood people who say there’s “too much” stuff to get through – yes, I’m looking at you, former newspaper readers. (And former magazine subscribers, and …)

For one thing, “too much” has never been a problem for Americans, home of Costco and Sam’s Club and super-size meals. For another, most of the time it’s not like it’s all tossed in there willy-nilly – there’s some organization to let you pick and choose what you read/consume. (more…)

Moody Blues’ midnight move-out; Twist still swinging

Monday, July 28th, 2008 by Sam Mittelsteadt

While on rounds this weekend I chatted up some Scottsdale store owners and managers — many lamented the loss of Mahsa Jaeger’s store at Scottsdale Waterfront. But despite rumors of a similar fate, Twist boutique in the same shopping center is not going out of business, says store manager Nicole Lockman.

Lockman says she thinks the fact the store is having a gigantic sale, paired with the neighboring store’s closing, has led some people to believe their clearance sale is something permanet. That’s not the case, she says — and you can see for yourself at 7135 E. Camelback Road.

But to be filed under the “True” category: Moody Blues pulled a “midnight move-out” of its space at The Mix Shops of Southbridge on Stetson Drive. Store owners Randy and Shannon Gatewood kept the Chandler store open, and my source says they’re looking for a new location in Scottsdale. The challenge will be fulfilling those pesky exclusivity agreements, which require a certain geographic distance between stores that carry the same merchandise.

‘Project Runway’ designers hook up!

Two designers from this season of “Project Runway” have started dating. (Cue the “They have designs on each other,” etc., puns now.) See who after the jump.

Carmaker website offers a square deal - $5 T-shirts

Friday, July 25th, 2008 by Sam Mittelsteadt

The joy of trolling through blogs of friends-of-friends-of-friends: You’re bound to run into something you never would have found otherwise.

From Lori MacBlogger to Go Nicole Yourself to Steph Sklar … and, suddenly, I found myself at the Nissan Cube site that lets you create your own T-shirt — pick the color, pick the saying, pick the shirt style — for free and pay just $5 to have it shipped. (The Cube is a car the company will introduce in November.)

The phrase I chose: “Have a secret crush, and a secret admirer.” Because I always have at least a few crushes going at all times — boy crushes (numerous) and even a girl crush or two (right now, one of Albert’s sisters) . It makes life a lot easier. And fun.

Warning 1: They tack a little Nissan line on there, too — c’mon, it’s not FREE-free, just free of price — but still, $5 for a shirt you pick?

Warning 2: For a while it looks like you have to pay for the shirt, but a spot on the checkout page lets you drop the price back down to nothing.
