Win free Philosophy products, thanks to EV store opening

May 2nd, 2008, 3:38 pm by Sam Mittelsteadt

Valley-based skin care and cosmetics company Philosophy is opening its second stand-alone store in the East Valley — and the country! — this week. (Well, technically it’s the third store, if you count the long-gone shop on Mill Avenue, where I first got introduced to the line.)

The grand opening of the store at Dana Park shopping center, on the northwest corner of Baseline Road and Val Vista Drive, is scheduled for April 10 and to celebrate, the lovely folks at Philosophy let me pick out a few of their new items for a Tribune giveaway. See below for how to enter.

Lip gloss might encourage skin cancers

May 1st, 2008, 8:10 am by Sam Mittelsteadt

Those ultrashiny lip glosses can increase your chances of getting skin cancer, according to this report on MSN.

The shiny gloss attracts more light, “like a magnifying glass over your lips,” and the hydration of an occlusive formula “smooshes down” (to use the word of one of the dermatologists quoted in the article) lips’ natural outer protective layer, leaving the lips more vulnerable to UV rays … and sun damage. That could lead to conditions like “farmer’s lip” or, in worst-case scenario, skin cancer.

Two solutions: Use a balm with SPF under your gloss, or find a gloss with SPF included. (Hint: The Clinique Long Last Glosswear you could win here are SPF 15.)
