Great Stuff 5-11-08: Last-minute Mother’s Day ideas

May 9th, 2008, 1:28 pm · Post a Comment · posted by Sam Mittelsteadt

You DID remember it’s Mother’s Day, right?

My problem is that I always remember it from a planning point of view … but then Tuesday or Wednesday rolls around and — what the?! Why is that box still sitting on my couch waiting to be mailed? Why didn’t you buy a card to go with it?

If your mother, like mine, lives across the country, you’re pretty much out of luck except for that mandatory phone call. It is, after all, the busiest holiday for phone calls (but the Monday after Thanksgiving is actually the busiest day of the entire year, according to the Urban Legends Reference Page Web site).

But count your blessings if Mom lives nearby — you’ve got a few chances to pick up one of these last-minute gifts!

Inner Grace kit: Valley-based skin care company Philosophy, which has stand-alone stores in Casa Paloma in Chandler and Dana Park in Mesa, recently introduced gift sets for several occasions: “Congratulations,” “Just Because” and perhaps most appropriately for Mother’s Day, “Thank You.”

But my pick for your mom is sold only at Sephora stores (locally, Chandler Fashion Center or Scottsdale Fashion Square): The two-piece Inner Grace set ($58): 2-ounce eau de parfum and 8-ounce firming body emulsion, both with the lightly floral Inner Grace fragrance.

Want to win it for yourself (granted, too late for Mother’s Day giving)? Click on this link to send me an e-mail that includes your name and the mailing address to which I should send the products if you win. (No, I won’t forward them to our circulation department or anything.) Make sure to use the words INNER GRACE as your subject field. I’ll pick a winner from the entries received by 5 p.m. Thursday, April 15. Good luck!

(FYI: If you click on the Your Mom’s Philosophy Web site on May 11, you can see which of the 1,100-plus submitted “My Mom’s Philosophy” essays won a $1,200 shopping spree. Maybe you can crib some of the sentiment for the inside of your card.)

CK One Summer: Speaking of scents, when I was in Denver a few weeks ago I stopped in the new(ish) Calvin Klein store and got a whiff of this year’s incarnation of CK One Summer ($42), the limited-edition unisex fragrance. It starts out with a blast of ocean water (although they refer to it as “waterfall”), and the fresh water/beach effect keeps going thanks to watermint and cucumber notes. Definitely a fragrance more suited to a younger mom — but anyone who loves San Diego summer getaways would probably enjoy this scent. It’s available only at Macy’s and Sephora stores.
