Try as you may, there’s no way to take stock of the stock at Therapy and not utter “cute little dress.”
Store owner Katy Baker described one of her favorite pieces with the phrase.
The other shoppers said it over and over again last weekend as they browsed each zone of the store, separated by wall-mounted “waterfalls.” After the sixth or seventh time I heard it, it took on an absurd silliness.
“It’s so generic,” I thought. “Just the least amount of thought and the fewest amount of words necessary to compliment something. Nobody’s saying what specifically they find so appealing: the cut, the color, the shape …”
And then I met my match: a knit minidress with oversize buttons that marched up from the hem and vivid stripes that gave me Missoni-style butterflies.
“Look at THAT cute little dress!” I said. Out loud. To nobody.

Top seller (right): “When I got this Christopher Deane dress in, I’d sell ’em straight out of the box,” Baker says. (Silk off-shoulder dress, $325. Necklaces by Delicate Raymond, $84 [pearl and disc] and $98 [stone dove].
Bag with matching magnetized-latch makeup case by Marnie Bugs, $325.)
On the mannequin (left): White cotton dress by New Collective, $150. Antique filigree butterfly chain and necklaces with crystal clasp by Nola Singer, $535. White patent leather
“Crush” tote by Heather Hawkins, $598.
Core customer: “Believe it or not, mostly stay-at-home moms, 30-35,” Baker says. “Although one of my best customers is 67. She comes in here and SPENDS.”
High price point (right): The Black Halo line’s superflirty high-waisted skirts and little dresses ($200-$450)
are “fun to go out in,” Baker says. (Blue silk dress, $305.)
Low price point (left): Tees and tanks by Rebel Yell — but Baker eschews the crystal craze and opts for foil prints to provide the bling. “I don’t really go toward crystals, because
you can only have so much of it,” she says.
She’s excited about (right): Feminine dresses and colors, like this silk chiffon minidress with pockets by Daughters of the Revolution ($275). “You could wear it over a camisole or slip, and it looks cute high-belted. Or over a bikini. I bought this in the same color and wore it with high boots, but for summer it would look great with a gold gladiator sandal.” (Gold lotus flower cuff by Keri Wilder, $232. Necklace with antique ivory rose and blue topaz by Nola Singer, $325.)
* Except East Coast girls who dress all in black. They’ll probably hate this store.
