Great Stuff: 3-18-07

I walked into American Apparel the other day and was discombobulated by such vivid colors everywhere. "Uh, where’s the guy stuff?" I asked tentatively. "You’re standing in it," they said. It’s springtime! I grabbed a couple of these short-sleeved fine-jersey leisure shirts ($32) in aqua — which I ruined by spilling ketchup on the first day I wore it — and coral, but if they’re too bright for you, they sell them in 30 different colors. The Tempe store is at 526 S. Mill Ave. (one’s planned at 4501 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale, this spring). Online: www.americanapparel.net.

There are only two times when I feel like taking a bath instead of a shower — when I am freezing and want to warm up or when I am sick and want to warm up. So when I had the flu a couple of weeks ago, I could only look at the ads for Jellybath and wish I had planned ahead: The powder turns bath water the consistency of tapioca and holds heat four times longer than regular water. (Added bonuses: It softens skin and reduces swelling.) Scents include herb mint, lemongrass, milk, strawberry and lavender; boxes hold enough for one bath soak ($24), eight soaks for your feet ($20) or two pedicures ($10). Find the products at Honeysuckle Hollow, 1941 W. Guadalupe Road, Mesa; Steven Paul Salon, 7045 E. Third Ave., Scottsdale; EM III Design, 710 W. Elliot Road, Tempe. Online, check out www.jellybath.com.

Want to be beautiful and make the Earth a little better, too? For every tube of PlantLove lipstick ($20) sold, Cargo donates $2 to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Plus the lipstick case is made of biodegradable corn, not plastic, and the cardboard box it’s all sold in has wildflower seeds embedded in it — moisten and plant for new blooms. Five of the 12 shades were designed by celebrities, if you’re into blind star worship.
