PRINCE ‘CONTROVERSY’

See the pun there — "Controversy" being a Prince song and all? Aw, never mind.Anyway, I went to the best Super Bowl party ever this weekend, courtesy of my friends Jeff and Greg, who hosted a shindig that, thanks to the joy of TiVo, began about an hour and a half after the game did: We sat around and ate queso dip, drank and watched the commercials, then fast-forwarded our way through all that football to the next set of ads.Oh, and the Prince halftime show. Now, you have to take into account that the whole Janet Jackson thing probably wouldn’t have caused a nipple ripple at this house … but when they raised a big billowy curtain and Prince raised that exotic guitar … even we raised our eyebrows."That looks sort of like a penis," one of us said."Yeah, if it were some sort of freakish devil penis," someone else said.
And then the curtain came down, and we relived the late ’80s a little bit longer — including the fact that the same "Darling Nikki" that was so scandalous back in the day our parents wouldn’t let us play the record in the house ("she did WHAT with a magazine?!") was remade by the Foo Fighters a decade later and played on the radio. (Rebecca Romijn did a cover version, too. Find it on iTunes — it’s deliciously campy and awful.)But apparently some people really need some controversy in their lives, because they’re complaining to CBS and the NFL about the obscenity in the show. And me? The whole time I kept staring at the TV and thinking, "Damn, even in the pouring rain, his makeup looks awesome, even in high-def! I wonder what products he’s using?" (My guess: Tattooed eyeliner.)I was glad when he lost the Aunt Jemima head-wrap, though.

I haven’t heard nearly as much flack over Prince’s little shadow play with his guitar…but I was excited to be taken back to my teenage years when Prince and Morris Day were the reigning royalty of the music industry, both as a team and feuding against each other.
Prince looks fabulous for 49, and yes, his make-up was flawless!
Wish I could make it Las Vegas to see his concert…
It was nice little trip down memory lane.
